From Zero Experience to Chasing His Dream: Jonathan’s Video Game Design Journey at Trillium College

GET STARTED

For as long as he can remember, Jonathan dreamed of designing video games.

Like many aspiring creators, he imagined building immersive worlds, designing characters, and creating experiences that players would remember. But there was one obstacle standing in his way: fear.

“I’ve always wanted to do it,” Jonathan says. “But I was scared as a kid.” That fear kept his dream on hold for years. Then one day, he made a decision that changed everything.

“But this year, I decided to push myself and really do it.” That decision led him to Trillium College’s Video Game Designer Diploma Program and to a level of confidence he never thought possible.

Starting from Scratch

Jonathan didn’t arrive with a portfolio. He didn’t know industry software. He had never created game assets before.

“I had zero experience before starting.”

For many people, that would be intimidating. But for Jonathan, it became the beginning of an exciting learning journey. With every class, project, and assignment, he began developing skills that once felt impossible.

Today, he says something he never imagined he would: “I’ve gone from zero experience to now I’m able to teach someone.”

Learning in a Supportive Environment

One of the biggest reasons Jonathan has enjoyed his experience is the support he’s received from his instructors.

“Mike and Justin; they have so much patience; they’re really amazing teachers. I couldn’t ask for a better teacher.”

Learning something completely new can be challenging, but Jonathan says patience makes all the difference: “They have so much patience.”

Knowing that he could ask questions, make mistakes, and continue improving gave him the confidence to keep pushing himself. Even as he continues exploring which area of game design interests him most, he knows he has people cheering him on.

“I’m still trying to get my footing and (see) what I really really like. Luckily, I have Mike and Justin’s support”

A Quick Start to a New Career

Jonathan says enrolling at Trillium College was easier than he expected.

“It took maybe a week at the maximum.”

His Career Coach guided him through every step: “My Career Coach, Paul Noble, was really good. He helped me out, really helped me with the process and set up for me.” That smooth experience allowed Jonathan to focus on what mattered most, starting his journey.

Looking Ahead

Jonathan isn’t rushing to define exactly where his career will take him. For now, he’s enjoying the process of learning, creating, and discovering where his strengths lie. “Maybe (I’ll be) making like assets or being a video game designer, of course.”

Wherever he ends up, he knows he’s building a strong foundation.

Jonathan’s Advice

For anyone wondering whether they should leap into game design, Jonathan has one message.

“I would say follow your dream. If you believe you can do it, then you should do it.”

His story proves that experience isn’t what determines success. The willingness to start does. Sometimes, chasing your dream begins with simply believing you can
