Course Overview

Community & Developmental Service Workers play a vital role in supporting individuals and families facing developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and addictions. In this program, you’ll develop the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to provide meaningful support while helping people navigate life’s challenges with dignity and independence.

Hands-on experience is a key part of your learning. After completing 40 hours of community volunteer service, you’ll move into a placement experience where you’ll work alongside experienced professionals, build real-world skills, and see firsthand the difference your support can make.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Mature Student Status
  • MTCU VSS Waiver
  • Completed Vulnerable Sector Screening waiver (VSS).

Placement Requirements

  • Trillium College Immunization Report; completed and signed by a medical professional.
  • Submission of a clear Police Check (CPIC) report with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • 40 volunteer hours completed

Community & Developmental Service Worker FAQs

The CDSW Diploma Program is a 13-month program that prepares you to support individuals and families facing developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, or addictions. You’ll learn how to assess client needs, provide advocacy, and connect individuals with the community resources that help them live more independent and fulfilling lives.

Classes are delivered through live, instructor-led virtual lectures, allowing you to learn from home while staying actively engaged with your instructors and classmates in real time. The program also includes two field placements, along with on-campus First Aid and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training.

The program can be completed in approximately 13 months, allowing you to gain the skills and hands-on experience needed to begin your career in just over a year.

You’ll study areas such as client assessment, counseling strategies, non-violent crisis intervention, addictions and mental health support, diversity, pharmacology, family dynamics, and legal awareness. The program also focuses on developing practical skills in behavioral support, communication, and client advocacy.

Yes. After completing coursework and 40 volunteer hours, you’ll participate in a 540 hour comprehensive field placement where you gain real-world experience supporting individuals in community and developmental service settings.

Graduates may work as community service workers, developmental service workers, crisis intervention workers, family support workers, mental health aides, or addictions workers. Opportunities can be found in settings such as schools, hospitals, shelters, community agencies, and government programs.

Community and developmental service workers are needed in a wide range of settings, including community agencies, schools, hospitals, and social service organizations. As communities continue to expand support services for mental health, developmental disabilities, and family support, the demand for trained professionals continues to grow.

No previous experience is required. The program is designed to provide the foundational knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on training needed to prepare you for entry into the field. In addition, each student is required to complete 40 volunteer hours before placement.
