Dental Assistant FAQs

To become a Dental Assistant in Ontario, you typically need to complete a recognized diploma program that includes training in chairside assisting, infection prevention and control, dental radiography, patient care, and dental office procedures.

The Dental Assistant – Level 1 & 2 Diploma Program includes hands-on training and prepares you to work in a clinical dental setting. Graduates are eligible to write the National Dental Assisting Examining Board (NDAEB) certification exam, which is required to work as a certified Level 2 Dental Assistant in Canada.

The program can be completed in approximately one year. During that time, you’ll progress from foundational knowledge to hands-on clinical training through a combination of online learning, in-person labs, and placement experience.

The program is delivered in a hybrid format, combining live instructor-led online classes with mandatory in-person labs. Students attend hands-on training at dental school campuses in Kingston, Oshawa, and St. Catharines (Niagara) to build the clinical skills required for practice.

You’ll develop the practical skills needed to work confidently in a dental practice, including:

• Chairside assisting and intra-oral procedures

• Dental radiography (HARP-recognized training)

• Infection prevention and sterilization techniques

• Patient care and communication

• Dental office procedures and workflow

Training is designed to reflect real clinical environments, helping you build both technical and professional skills.

Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of settings, including:

• General dental practices

• Specialty clinics (orthodontics, periodontics)

• Community health clinics

• Hospitals

Dental assistants play a key role in supporting dentists, hygienists, and patients across many clinical environments.

Dental Assistants support dentists with procedures, patient care, and clinical preparation. Dental Hygienists focus on preventive care, such as cleanings and oral health treatment.

Becoming a hygienist requires completing a separate dental hygiene program and meeting additional licensing requirements.

Yes. While a separate Dental Hygiene diploma would still required to become a Dental Hygienist, starting as a Dental Assistant is a great way to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting, understand how dental practices operate, and build foundational skills that are highly valuable as you continue toward a career in dental hygiene.

Entry-level Dental Assistants in Ontario typically earn $24–$30 per hour (approximately $45,000–$60,000 annually), depending on experience and location.

With additional experience, certifications, and expanded clinical responsibilities, earning potential can increase over time.

The best first step is to connect with a Career Coach. They can answer your questions, walk you through the program, and help you determine if the Dental Assistant - Level 1&2 Diploma Program is the right path for you.
