About the Early Childhood Education Diploma

Quality early childhood education helps shape how children grow, learn, communicate, and build confidence from their earliest years forward. The Early Childhood Education Diploma Program is designed for students who want to build a meaningful career supporting children from birth to age 12 during key stages of cognitive, social, emotional, language, and physical development.

Through this program, you’ll develop the practical skills, professional knowledge, and hands-on experience needed to work in early learning environments with confidence. You’ll explore the major frameworks that guide modern practice, including the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), How Does Learning Happen?, and ELECT (Early Learning for Every Child Today), while learning how to create environments that support belonging, well-being, engagement, and expression.

The program also emphasizes professional ethics, family collaboration, pedagogy, and inclusive practice so you graduate ready to contribute in early learning settings with both compassion and professionalism. Upon graduation, students are eligible to register with the College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE), which is required to work as an Early Childhood Educator in Ontario.

The Early Childhood Education Diploma program offered by Trillium College at their Oshawa Campus in a a hybrid format has been approved by the College of Early Childhood Educators for a period of two years (2026-2028) for the purpose of meeting the education requirement for registration.

Course Overview

The early years are some of the most important in a child’s life, and Early Childhood Educators play a vital role in helping children feel supported, capable, and ready to learn. In this program, you’ll build the knowledge and practical skills needed to support children across different stages of development while creating safe, responsive, and engaging environments where they can grow.

Through a combination of theory and real-world application, you’ll explore child development, observation and documentation, curriculum planning, guidance strategies, health and safety, nutrition, inclusion, family relationships, and professional practice. You’ll also strengthen your communication and employability skills through coursework in written communication, resume writing, and job search preparation.

Hands-on learning is a major part of the experience. The program includes three practicums that allow you to apply classroom learning in professional childcare environments, helping you build confidence and workplace readiness before graduation.
